Marine expert issues chilling warning to Sydney Harbour swimmers after woman mauled by shark at Elizabeth Bay

A marine biologist has issued a chilling warning to Sydneysiders, saying they should avoid swimming in the early hours of the morning and at night to avoid sharks.

Appearing on Sunrise on Tuesday, Humane Society International’s Lawrence Chlebeck spoke about sharks in the harbour following the shark attack in Elizabeth Bay on Monday, in which a 29-year-old woman was bitten.

With many swimmers cooling off in the harbour this summer, Lawrence warned it was also an area of lots of shark activity, and swimmers should choose the times they get into the water carefully.

“During the day, in full sun, these are the times when sharks are a little less active,” Lawrence began.

“But their sensors are heightened in the evening and early mornings — those are the times I would avoid swimming in the harbour.”

Lawrence said his first reaction to the attack was “why is someone swimming in the harbour at night?”, saying it certainly “wasn’t advisable”.

“It’s an area of high shark activity, and we need to recognise the best places to swim and maybe not,” he said.

“Historically, there’s been bites in the harbour. Abattoirs used to dump in the harbour and there’s generational intelligence … where they can get a feed — these are areas sharks know to go.”

His comments followed Monday night’s attack in Sydney Harbour, off Elizabeth Bay, in which a 29-year-old woman sustained injuries to a leg.

According to early reports, the woman was swimming at a private wharf at Billyard Avenue, Elizabeth Bay just before 8pm when she was bitten on her right leg.

It is believed she had just jumped off the wharf and was swimming out to a boat when she was attacked.

Witnesses jumped in to save her and pulled her back to land, including a vet who applied a tourniquet to her leg to stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived.

“My wife’s a vet and she basically bandaged it up,” the woman’s wife told 7NEWS.

“The bone’s broken, it’s pretty hectic but she seems to be OK.

“She’s in a lot of shock, we kept her warm.”

Had the woman been further out in the water, “she wouldn’t have survived”, she added.

NSW Ambulance said the woman suffered critical injuries and severe blood loss from injuries to her lower leg.

A rescue helicopter was on standby, but she was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital by road and was in a serious condition as of Tuesday morning.

7NEWS understands she will undergo surgery later on Tuesday.

Witnesses believe it was a bull shark, which are common in the harbour, but the species has not been confirmed.
