Nicole Kidman gives rare insight into family life with her daughters on Sunrise interview

Nicole Kidman has given Sunrise viewers a rare insight into her family life, gushing about her two daughters, Sunday, 15, and Faith, 13.

Sitting down with Edwina Bartholomew on Tuesday, the Oscar winner was asked if her kids had seen her old films, including BMX Bandits.

The Expats star confirmed her two girls love the film.

“They’ve watched BMX Bandits … they love BMX Bandits … but they aren’t that interested in my work,” Kidman said.

“It’s kind of great — I don’t have to worry about that (the kids being too interested in my work) — in the sense they have very full lives themselves and I just get out of the way.”

Kidman has two teenage girls with her country music superstar husband, Keith Urban. She has two other children with ex-husband Tom Cruise — Connor and Isabella.

During the wide-ranging interview, Kidman revealed it was her sister Antonia Kidman, a Sydney-based lawyer, who suggested she make Expats into a series.

Expats follows Kidman as ‘Margaret’ — a mother who loses her young son at a market, who is then torn between staying or leaving Hong Kong, with her affluent family.

The Australian star said friends and family often give her material they think would make for a good film or TV series.

“I put it out there (to my friends), I say, ‘if you ever read a good book, let me know, and so I do have people give me novels, and articles, (and other material)‘.”

At the show’s premiere at The Verona cinema in Sydney in December, Kidman said Antonia was watching with the audience, in what she called a “full circle” moment.

“(It was) one of the rare times you go ‘this has now come full circle’,” Kidman said.

“It was kind of exquisite to sit at The Verona, just before Christmas, where we had a premiere, where we showed episode five and my sister was in the audience. This actually made this happen. This is all Antonia.”

Kidman turned her attention to the role of Margaret on Expats, admitting she almost didn’t take the job.

“It was Lulu’s choice (Lulu Wang, the filmmaker) to cast me as Margaret,” she said.

“A lot of times when I produce something, or I option a book, I don’t have to be in it.

“If it helps for me to be in it, to get it made, I will do that. At the same time, I don’t say, ‘I want to do this role’ (when it comes to films or TV).”
