Residents in Doreen in Melbourne’s north hear mysterious ‘loud bang’ on Wednesday night

Mystery surrounds what caused a noise that sounded like a large explosion and was heard by residents in Melbourne’s north overnight.

In footage posted to social media, a Doreen resident can be seen getting something out of his car when there appears to be a flash of light, followed by a loud bang just before 9pm.

He then walks to the street to try to find the cause of the sound.

While it has not yet been confirmed, on Thursday morning Doreen locals told Sunrise, they were adamant the noise was caused by a meteorite.

On social media, residents in Balwyn, Diamond Creek, Doncaster, Fairfield and Hawthorn reported hearing the bang.

In August, there was a similar incident in which a ball of light passed over Victorian skies and was accompanied by a “loud boom”.

The space agency later confirmed that object was believed to be remnants of a Russian Soyuz-2 rocket re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
