The Sunrise crew have been left speechless over a wild hack for cooking chicken that Jamie Oliver shared live on-air.
The UK celebrity chef appeared on Thursday’s show to prepare his take on a “Chicken and Chips” while promoting his new cookbook, 5 Ingredients Mediterranean.
But it was his very unusual method for cooking the chook that prompted a huge response from Sunrise stars Nat Barr, Matt Shirvington, Edwina Bartholomew and Mark Beretta.

After marinating the chicken legs and potatoes in a lemon, herb and honey mixture, Jamie then showed how he prepares the chicken before cooking.
He simply places the end of the chook legs in between the grills of an oven rack, so they are wedged in place.
Jamie then places the rack into a hot oven so the chicken pieces are hanging underneath, with the tray of potatoes and onions on a separate rack underneath.

The hack means you get chicken with perfectly crispy skin, as well has beautifully flavoured vegetables underneath.
Jamies says the tip was inspired by his travels.
“If you go around parts of the Mediterranean, you’re going to see rotisseries functioning and working on the roadsides,” he said.
“They’re roasting whole chickens, they’re rendering fat and there’s potatoes underneath them and sometimes vegetables.

“This is giving you the best, most juicy chicken and crispy skin and that’s all dripping down into potatoes, giving you that beautiful potato.”
He then explained his technique for threading the chicken through the oven grill.
“I’ve tossed these ones up [in the marinate], but I’ve put the chicken legs through a regular bar of an oven,” he said.
“You’ve all got these kind of bars – just bend it open and put the knuckle of the chicken in. Look at that.

“So we’re going to basically reenact that roasting, right?
“We’re going to reenact that dripping and that crispy skin and these veggies here are going to catch all of that come and have a little look at what’s happened.”
Jamie then moved to the oven to show how the simple hack had resulted in perfectly cooked chicken legs – like it had been in a rotisserie.
“This is real cooking, guys – five ingredients working really hard,” he said.

“We have the crispiest skin dipping down onto the potatoes – look at these potatoes, these are the best potatoes you’re ever gonna see.
“Look at them just gnarly and golden, and the onions have gone jammy.
“You’ve got the lemon skin in there all the time – that chicken and the flavor from the bone dripping onto the potatoes and that’s what you end up with.”

After the segment finished, the Sunrise crew said they were gobsmacked by the simple tip.
“Mind blown,” Shirvo said. “How good was that?”
“Wow,” added Nat.
Shirvo and Beretts then stood up and gave Jamie a standing ovation.
“I did not expect that,” Nat added. “I have never seen that!”
