Sunrise host Matt Shirvington reveals how he stays fit in the festive season, ahead of his first time hosting Carols in the Domain

Sunrise host Matt Shirvington will present Sydney’s Carols in the Domain for the first time, and the TV anchor couldn’t be more excited.

On Monday, the Olympian, 45, sat down to discuss all things Christmas with 7NEWS.com.au, ahead of the magical evening of performances by Australia’s biggest stars.

Shirvo was an open book as he revealed his secret hack for staying fit in the festive season, his greatest-ever Christmas present and his plans for the new year.

He said like the rest of us, he planned on indulging, but added his tip for staying in good shape is keeping gym equipment in his car.

“I have a medicine ball in the boot of the car permanently,” Shirvo said.

“It’s cathartic putting on the headphones and working out.”

He said the medicine ball allows him to squeeze in a 45-minute workout, often at a nearby park if he is too busy to make it to the gym.

The champion runner said he will do six sets of ten lifts with the medicine ball, lifting with his legs, before doing multiple laps jogging around the park.

“It gives you an all over body circuit,” he said.

Shirvo showed no sign of nerves ahead of hosting the Domain event alongside Sunrise co-presenter Natalie Barr, which will see performers including Dami Im, Casey Donovan, Rhonda Burchmore, Paulini, Mahalia Barnes and Lucy Durack take to the stage.

On Monday, the Carols in the Domain countdown officially started with the New Idea songbook release. Shirvo revealed Jingle Bells was his all-time favourite.

“It just screams Christmas to me,” he said.

Turning his attention to his own Christmas, Shirvo said it all changed for him after he became a father. The former athlete shares three children with wife Jessica — Sienna, 17, Winnie, 15 and Lincoln, five.

“There’s something so special about seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child,” he said.

Shirvo said he considers himself a “big kid” at Christmas.

“If someone were to gift me a remote control, bike, skateboard or drone, I’d like it. I love activities,” he said.

The anchor admitted his greatest ever Christmas gift was a surfboard he got before high school.

“I would have been in Year Six at primary school. I came downstairs and checked under the tree and just saw one gift for me, which I thought was lame,” he said.

“It was then I saw the surfboard was laying on the lounge.”

Shirvo admitted his family was light on traditions but confessed to being a fan of his mother-in-law’s profiteroles with fresh cream and chocolate — which were always a hit with the entire family.

As we inch towards the Christmas break, Shirvo said he intends on turning off the alarm, spending time relaxing at the beach and possible weekend trips down to Melbourne.

Finishing the year on a high, after Sunrise was named Australia’s number one breakfast show, Shirvo said he relished in the passion and energy of the breakfast program.

“It’s great — I’m feeling great,” he said.

“I love the show, the people, and our viewers are always at the front of our mind.”

He will host Carols n the Domain alongside Sunrise co-presenter Natalie Barr.

Sydney Carols in the Domain will be broadcast nationally on Channel 7 and 7Plus on Saturday, December 23. at 7.30pm AEDT.
