Sunrise host Matt Shirvington takes aim at Education Minister Jason Clare over prime minister’s response to detainee arrests

Sunrise host Matt Shirvington has grilled Federal Education Minister Jason Clare on whether the public would hear from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the freed detainee debacle.

Clare appeared on Sunrise alongside deputy leader of the opposition Sussan Ley on Thursday, with Shirvo asking about Albanese’s response to the crisis.

Clare attempted to dodge the question by saying the prime minister spoke during question time on Wednesday, only to be taken to task by the Sunrise host.

“Not everyone watches question time,” Shrivo said, questioning if the public would get a more substantive response over the political firestorm. It comes after a fifth detainee was arrested on Thursday by Queensland police on an outstanding NSW revocation of a parole arrest warrant, in relation to a serious assault offence.

“He was taken to the Brisbane watchhouse, where NSW officers will travel to extradite the man in the coming days,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Despite the new arrest, the minister ran the same talking points the government has used for most of the week, placing the blame on the High Court’s November ruling that indefinite detention was illegal.

Ley countered the government could have waited for the reasons for the decision to be released before allowing the detainees out in the community.

Ley claimed this could have allowed “three extra weeks” for authorities to create community safeguards.

“This has been a disaster from the start and it is all the government’s fault,” Ley said.

“They lost the case and released over 100 criminals without a proper plan to deal with them.”

Ley also took aim at Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

“Where is the prime minister? Nowhere to be seen. Hiding in his office. He has not stepped-up to reassure the Australian people about community safety going into Christmas,” she said.

Clare attempted to deflect from the issue, accusing the Liberals of playing politics, but Ley was quick to fire back.

“He is here hiding from this issue. People are looking to a minister as they are going into summer to keep them safe,” she said during the tense debate.

Pressure is mounting on the Albanese Government as the opposition demands an apology to Australians over the issue.

Labor is looking to put people who may pose a risk to community safety back behind bars, under new laws creating a preventive detention regime which passed parliament on Wednesday night.

The government has been scrambling to respond to the High Court’s decision, which overturned 20 years of legal precedent to rule indefinite detention unlawful when there was no prospect of resettlement.

More than 140 people have been released in response to the court’s decision.
